Abstract:In environment with a high ambient temperature and strong solar irradiation, transformer winding hot-spot temperature may increase over its maximum permissible limit, it does not only threaten the safe operation of transformer, but will largely reduce the transformer insulation life. Therefore, it is important to take research of the impact of the sun on the power transformer thermal behavior. In this paper, a model for calculating solar irradiation power is presented to account for the effect on transformer, and it has been transformed as a heating source when calculating transformer hot-spot temperature. A simple modification of IEEE loading guide model is preformed, the comparison between before and after shows that the influence of solar irradiation on transformer hot-spot calculation and daily operation cannot be neglected.
