Abstract:Aiming at the problem of traveling wave dispersion and its adverse effects on traveling wave fault location (TWFL) for long distance high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line, a ± 800kV DC line, ranging from 10 km to 3 000km, is simulated and the traveling wave dispersion and its influence on TWFL are analyzed. In order to accurately calibrate the arrival time and wave velocity of dispersive traveling wave, a novel time-domain calibration method is proposed. Based on this calibration method, the distance-time deviation curves and the distance-wave velocity curves are simulated and analyzed for different transmission distances. A TWFL method based on wave velocity curve and iterative calculation is offered to achieve high location accuracy. The method is proved to be accurate and practical by wave-replaying experiments on TWFL device prototypes.
