The Xiamen ±320kV flexible HVDC transmission demonstration project is successfully put into operation in 2015. With the continuous progress of China’s flexible HVDC transmission technology and the rapid development of Xiamen power grid in recent years, it is found that when the single-phase grounding fault occurs at the valve side of the converter transformer, the grid side AC circuit breaker cannot quickly remove the fault and the single-phase grounding short-circuit current at the grid side exceeds the standard. Combined with the transformation of the Xiamen flexible HVDC project, the improvement scheme of phase selection tripping strategy and non-grounding-point tripping strategy is proposed. In this paper, the causes of the above problems are analyzed theoretically. Then the improvement scheme is explained in detail. Finally, simulation and field experiments are carried out. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the improvement scheme.
