A novel power conversion system and its maximum power point tracking control for switched reluctance wind turbine

Abstract:A new type of switched reluctance generator (SRG) power converter with variable excitation voltage and the minimum number of switching tubes to date is proposed. The power converter consists of a main circuit and an excitation circuit. The main circuit requires a number of main switching tubes equal to the number of SRG phase windings, while the excitation circuit requires only one main switching tube. The excitation voltage is decoupled from the generation voltage and can be controlled independently. The excitation circuit has no isolation links and is common to the main circuit. The operating principle and control process of the new power converter are analyzed. A maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control method for the SRG based on this new power converter is proposed for variable speed wind power generation applications, and an excitation voltage disturbance control strategy is given. A 750W SRG prototype system is simulated and experimented, and compared with the SRG wind power MPPT based on a power converter with shared upper switching tubes. The results show a 1.5% increase in SRG output power based on this new variable excitation minimum switches power converter. The effectiveness of this new power converter is confirmed.
