Abstract:High voltage transmission line is the main channel of transmitting electricity, and the operation reliability is close to power effective transmission. In this paper, by analyzing advantages and disadvantages of single-ended traveling wave method and double-ended traveling wave method, transmission line fault location technology based on the OPGW cable was proposed. Basic Principle and advantages of this fault location technology were also introduced. Three-phase overhead lines fault model was constructed which including two transformer substations and transmission lines at the voltage level of 220 kV based on PSCAD. Through a variety of simulations on transmission line under different fault types in different fault points, the changing characteristics of voltage and current were found. In addition, the transient process of the fault phase voltage waveform was analyzed in detail and the fault point was located using the wave pattern features. By comparison, the simulation results and the actual location of fault point were very close, which proved the feasibility of this fault location method.
