Abstract This paper introduces the structure scheme of smart substation, as well as the technical characteristics of the electronic instrument transformer and information communication network used in the process level of smart substation, and reviews research on the impacts of the two technologies on the operation performance and functional expansion of the relay protection installed in the substation’s bay level. In addition, according to several project cases, it sums up the adaptabilities of the relay protection to the electronic instrument transformer and communication network. The conclusions are helpful to the future research on the relay protection located in smart substation.
