Abstract The safe operation of high voltage switchgear is important to keep the grid security and stability, and it's an useful means to understand the working status of the high voltage switchgear through the monitoring of partial discharge. In this paper, we describe the characteristics of partial discharge in high voltage switchgear, and compare the ultra-high frequency detection method with the pulse current detection method. According to the comparison, we chose the current detection method based on Rogowski coil for monitoring partial discharge in high voltage switchgear. Experiments show that the detector had many advantages as monitoring real-time and on-line, rapid response, high sensitivity, low cost, safe and reliable, which prove that the detector is very suitable for monitoring partial discharge in high voltage switchgear.
