Abstract In order to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic power generation system, a new variable step perturbation and observation method(P&O) has been put forward in this paper, which solves the shortcomings of the traditional fixed step P&O. The method sets the next step proportional to the difference between the current voltage and the voltage corresponding to the maximum power point of the photovoltaic cell. To verify its effects,the simulation model of the maximum power point tracking is established in the Matlab / Simulink. The simulation results show that,the proposed model has better dynamic performance and stronger adaptability to the changes in the external environment.
