Abstract The safe and stable operation of the power grid are affected by GIS internal discharge, So, developing live testing and fault diagnosis of GIS equipment technology is absolutely necessary and significant. Combined with an example of abnormal sound defect for 500kV GIS, abnormal sound positioning and analysis is carried out through the use of ultrasonic testing, gas composition testing, infrared temperature and vibration testing and other means, the conclusion that vibration appeared inside of the equipment caused by the loosening of shield is verified by disintegration. Finally, the appropriate countermeasures and anti-accident measures are put forward.
