Abstract  It has a new approach for the field test of power cables in recent years, due to application and development of very low frequency (VLF) technique. Common 0.1Hz high voltage source includes cosine-rectangular waves, triangular waves, etc. This paper describes a new kind of exponential wave generator, which mostly consists of a high-voltage AC source, a HV power electronic switching and HV resistor. Furthermore, preliminary experiments have been conducted in the lab, proving that it’s feasible and effective in the field of cable insulation detection by using exponential wave generator.
