Abstract The development process of the theory of out-of-step separation device is summarized, and the limitation of criterion theory based on locally variables is analysed. The wide application of PMU device and the development of communication technology create the conditions for the implement of wide area out-of-step separation system. Following, the basic principle and implementation scheme of out-of-step criterion theory based on wide area measurement information is introduced. Finally, the validity and superiority of wide area out-of-step separation system is validated by the simulation in a large power grid.
