A method for reducing peak current by stepped tooth in switched reluctance motor |

Abstract Switched reluctance motor (SRM) has the advantages of simple structure, high reliability, and has been widely used in the application of low-speed driving. However, the double salient structure of SRM and the high saturation of the magnetic circuit lead to the problem of commutation peak current. In order to reduce the commutation peak current and the capacity of the driving system, a steped tooth structure of the stator is proposed. The output torque of the motor is ensured by the first-stage tooth with narrower arc, and the saturation of the stator poles is reduced by the second-stage tooth with wide arc. Firstly, the feasibility of the stepped tooth structure to reduce the saturation of the iron core is studied. Then, the finite element analysis is used to analyze the output torque and commutation peak current influenced by the size of the step tooth. At last, from the perspective of engineering consideration, a design method of the stepped tooth SRM with pole shoes structure is proposed. The results show that the stepped tooth structure can improve the anti-saturation ability of the SRM and reduce the commutation peak current effectively.
