Open circuit fault diagnosis method for modular multilevel converter submodule based on support vector machine |

Abstract With the increasing application range of modular multilevel converters (MMC), the open circuit fault diagnosis methods of MMC submodules have become a research hotspot. MMC has fewer fault samples, more normal samples, and too many redundant submodules. In response to these issues, an open circuit fault diagnosis method for MMC submodule based on support vector machine (SVM) is proposed in this paper, which determines whether the faults of the submodules occur within or outside the region, in order to achieve detection and localization of the submodules. Based on the open circuit fault characteristics of the MMC submodule, the capacitor voltage of the submodule is selected as the sample feature. Subsequently, the impact of submodule faults on phase A, B, and C samples is analyzed. By assigning different weight coefficients to normal samples of phase A, B, and C, the accuracy of fault identification is improved. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated with the constructed MMC simulation model.
