Abstract  A fault condition of a 220kV transmission line Capacitor Voltage Transformer (CVT) is introduced. Through disassembly check, experimental study and simulation based on ATP-EMTP software of the faulty CVT, the main fault cause that sudden load change in the secondary side after the disconnection of the damping resistor leads to resonance overvoltage is found. In the end, some suggestions are given to avoid similar failures such as taking and analyzing oil from the electromagnetic unit, adding harmonic analysis functionality in the On-line Monitoring system and so on.
