Abstract This paper introduces the control principle and hierarchical and regional structure of automatic voltage control (AVC) system. It analyzes the faults and problems of automatic voltage control system application in the 500kV substation. Increasing the reactance rate switch strategy and improving the fault blocking strategy are proposed for switch strategy of the AVC system. The measures that add the hard control panel and adjust the interval of remote control are adopted for related settings in substation. Finally, it prospects the effect of new technique application on the AVC system, and suggests that the switch strategy may correlation with important warning information and the new type remote terminal unit may realize the multiple blocking functions. All of these measures and proposals will further promote the security and the reliability of the AVC system.
