Abstract In the case of the partial occlusion, the I-V characteristic curve of the PV array is presented with multi steps, and its P-V characteristic curves contain multiple peaks. So the conventional PV array model has not been applied. Based on the engineering model of photovoltaic cells, a photovoltaic array model for partial shading is established. Using the model, the output characteristics of PV array are briefly analyzed. Simulation results show that the influences of partial shading on the output characteristics of PV array are different in the light intensity, temperature, the number of shadow and the distribution of the shadow.
