Abstract  A new protection theory, the Regional Protection Principle, is brought forward in this paper. In order to achieve high speed and the selective protection of coordinates, Intelligent controllers, with the aid of the peer-to-peer communication system, collect information of adjacent switch and make a comprehensive judgment. Through this method, the scheme realizes the real distributed, digital and intelligent protection.According to the situation of distribution network in China, the Regional Protection Principle can be classified into Radial network, Loop network., the whole breaker network structure, the breaker and load switch network structure, Fault-tolerant and so on. The implementation and the cases suggest thatthe distribution automation terminal, based on the regional protection, can locate and isolate the fault in milliseconds, significantly speed up the processing speed of the fault, effectively avoid the great trip and improve the power supply reliability.
