Abstract It is necessary to study some effective methods of replacing the central switchs in process layer of an intelligent substation, which effects the operation safety and the time and scope of power outage. By studying the networking mode and bearer service of central switchs in an intelligent substation, a method of the central switch replacement and test, including the replacement steps, test methods and security measures, is proposed. This method optimizes the replacement order of the central switchs, and makes full use of the time before replacement to do most of the test items of the new switch, which greatly reduces the power outage time and scope, and fully considers the safety measures during the replacement process. This method has been applied to the replacement of central switchs in the process layer of a 220kV intelligent station, which verifies the feasibility and validity of this method.
