Abstract With the utilization of intelligent facility, digitization technology and network control technology, there has been a revolution in structure and morphology of secondary system in smart substation. In order to analyze the difference between substation area protection of a new generation of smart substation and conventional relay protection, on the basis of introduction of research status, function deployment and theorem of substation area protection, the redundant protection of 110kV line and redundant backup protection of transformer low voltage measurement were researched in field experiment in this paper. The results show that the secondary system can better protected by a new generation of intelligent substation area protection.
