Abstract Mountain lightning activity, is the leading cause of 35kV distribution line fault is one of the important reasons. In this paper, substation incoming line in a coal mine in Shanxi is hit by lightning, lightning surge invasion substation insulation equipment damage of the typical accident, are analyzed and discussed. Through field investigation and test, analysis shows that the line lightning protection measure is undeserved, grounding resistance of substation incoming line is too high, line and distribution equipment insulation coordination is improper and the mountainous geography is the main cause leading to the accident. In view of the above situation this paper presented some improvement measures such as to remove unreasonable lightning protection equipment, to reduce the ground resistance of towers, arranged lightning protection for incoming line and some other measures, so as to improve the mining lightning protection level, to ensure personnel and property safety in mining area.
