Abstract  In this paper, the particularity of discharge facilities, lightning risks and status of lightning protection in the chemical outdoor equipment area is analyzed, and the design step of direct lightning protection is proposed. The two electrical-geometric models for calculating the air-termination system protection range are compared and analyzed, thus a conclusion is drawn. That is, leader propagation model is more effective and reliable for the calculation of the direct lightning protection range of chemical outdoor discharge facilities. In addition, by learning from the geometric calculation of the power line protection angle, a method of drawing protection range is given.
