Abstract In the case of large-scale disruption, the interval bi-directional capability failure of railway system has a long time duration and uncertainty. It is crucial to reschedule timetable and assign temporary dispatching orders to arrange transport operation and reduce effect in a short time. There exists two schemes of this problem, i.e. “wait and see” and “short turning”. In this paper, the applicability of the two solutions are analyzed on the basis of existing studies. A mixed integer- programming model of wait and see is developed with the consideration of specific scenarios and CPLEX is employed to get solutions. In addition, the paper makes qualitative analysis of the short turning scheme and discusses its applicability.
