Photovoltaic array fault detection and location based on voltage threshold and rightmost power peak point |

Abstract The faults in photovoltaic (PV) array reduce the efficiency of power generation and the life cycle of the PV system, and even lead to serious disasters such as fire. Therefore, the detection and location the PV array fault is of significant importance. This paper uses the voltage at the rightmost power peak (RPP) of PV array and the first PV modules of each PV string to detect and locate short-circuit faults in PV string, open-circuit faults and partial shades. In addition, the PV array voltage is normalized to determine the degree of short-circuit faults. The proposed method is independent of meteorological parameters and the number of sensors is small. The simulation based on a 10×5 PV array and the experiment using a practical 6×3 PV array are conducted to verify the performance of the proposed approach. The results demonstrate the practicability of the method.
