Abstract Offshore wind farms with large capacity need to be integrated into the mainland AC main network through voltage source based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) system, and the failure rate of the transmission lines running in the sea bottom is high, so the configuration of fast and reliable transmission line protection is a key problem to be solved. The fault travelling wave passes through current limiting reactance in the propagation process, the amplitude of the travelling wave is suppressed, and the travelling wave shape has smooth characteristics. According to this feature, this paper proposes a single-ended protection method for VSC-HVDC transmission line based on principal component analysis (PCA) and support vector machine (SVM). The simulation experimental results show that this protection method can quickly identify faults inside and outside the area.
