Abstract  An introduction to partial discharge defects of the UHV GIS circuit breaker is given in this paper. The methods of ultrasonic and UHF can be used to detect the defects. With the ultrasonic detection ,the can be preliminary judged abnormal, then the types of partial discharge signals can be confirmed. Judge the types of partial discharge signals using the feature atlas, finally using time difference method to locate the partial discharge source combined with the oscilloscope. The reason of partial discharge is confirmed based on disassembly of the GIS in factory and on test data. Finally based on the structural characteristics and operation characteristics of GIS equipment, from the perspective of monitoring, maintenance and repairing, this paper puts forward preventive measures to reduce the influence of similar defects on the system.
