Hotspot Location and Mitigation for Underground Power Cables

Abstract:Hotspots always limit the cable current-carrying capacity. By using the distributed temperature sensing (DTS), it could locate the hotspots of a 230kV 500MVA underground cable circuit. With a new technique, the derating at each hotspot was calculated, which helped to determine more accurately the thermal environment parameters at the hotspot. Case studies are also presented to show the useful restoration of full cable rating after the hotspots were mitigated.
