Abstract For the start of the gas turbine unit, the generator usually runs as a synchronous motor. Static frequency convertor changes the speed of stator rotating magnetic field through altering power frequency. It also controls excitation system to regulate the magnetic flow of the rotor. They work together to realize the speed adjustment of synchronous motor. Depending on a power plant of 3*200MW gas turbine unites, this paper states the design and application of excitation system for gas turbine. It was configured of two sets of static frequency convertor to control the three sets of gas turbine unites. So each excitation system needed to communication with two sets of static frequency convertor. And it required to work interlocked. Compared with the conventional excitation system, it has special configuration in the respect of hardware and software for the excitation system of gas turbine unites.
