Abstract Aim at the on-line monitoring of underground power cable, according to grounding current method, extract the grounding capacitive current that reflect the fault condition of power cable, use the metal shielding layer of power cable as the communication channel, based on the power line carrier communication, and use graphical programming language software to make the upper computer monitoring picture, set up and research on-line monitoring system of power cable based on shielding layer carrier communication. Introducing the working principle, software and hardware design and measured results. Experiment has proved that, the system’s arrangement of wire is simple and convenient, the cost of equipment is cheap, the transmission of signal is accurate, the effect of monitoring is good, it is suitable for the signal transmission of underground power grid in the urban and can be used for multiple parameters on-line monitoring of power cable with extension. The study has a certain reference value for on-line monitoring of power cable and transmission and distribution automation of town.
