Abstract This paper proposes a new PWM arithmetic based on virtual flux tracking for cascaded H-bridge STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator). Firstly, this paper establishes the virtual flux mathematical model, and obtain the PWM modulation arithmetic aimed at both virtual flux tracking and submodular capacitor voltage-balancing control. Then, per phase modulation signal can be determined by combining double closed loop control of STACOM. Finally, a simulation system is set up by Matlab/Simulink. The simulation results reveals that the proposed PWM arithmetic based on virtual flux tracking has a good modulation effects, and the submodular capacitor voltages can be balanced around reference value. At the same time, cascaded H-bridge STATCOM has a excellent dynamic response.
