Abstract  Flashover of transmission line insulator has become an important factor which influences the reliability of power supply. In this paper, based on electrostatic field theory, finite element models of 330kV toughened glass bead are established by finite element numerical calculation. Through calculations of the influence on the electric field surrounding the insulator, surface electric field distribution and surface electric field intensity distribution of the insulator, measures to optimize the surface electric field of the 330kV toughened glass bead are proposed.
