Abstract The problems on using of surge protection device (SPD) was introduced in this paper.Then an investigation on the reasonable type selection of SPD in terms of maximum continuous operating voltage, voltage protection level, impulse current and nominal discharge current was conducted by applying the relevant technical specifications of lightning protection system. In the end, it stressed that SPD must be matched with the devices. Then it can achieve its value truly.
