Abstract Subsea umbilical cable faults are critical to integrity of subsea production system. A simplified equivalent model was built for the subsea umbilical cable system of a gas field in South China sea. The EMTP (electro-magnetic transient program) is used in the model for simulating calculation analysis of different cable faults and obtaining the traveling wave propagation characteristics, which supports the parameter setting of the subsea umbilical cable fault location equipment.
