Abstract Gas relay is the main non-power protection device of the transformer . In this paper, the tripping accident caused by heavy gas protection operation of 220kV transformer is analyzed. Some in-depth investigation and analysis of possible causes was made. The cause of the accident is considered to be the transformer oil flow quickly upward surge and impact gas relay. A short time twice at the same time start and stop 2 oil pump caused by the short circuit of the substation impact of transformer. According to the problems exposed by this accident, the corresponding preventive measures was taken. At last, Proposed the testing and maintenance recommendations for transformer.
