Abstract This article introduces a case of light gas protection action failure of a 500kV reactor and illustrates the structure of the gas relay of the fault reactor and the principle of light gas action. The analysis shows that the light gas protection action is caused by improper treatment of oil-gas separation box after maintenance and unreasonable structure of oil-gas separation box, and the matters demanding attention during the maintenance of the reactor as well as the suggestions regarding upgrading the structure of the oil-gas separation box are put forward.
