Abstract Flashover of transmission line insulator has become an important factor which influences the reliability of power supply. In this paper, a simplified equivalent circuit model of a 330kV overhead transmission lines is established. The electro-magnetic transient program (EMTP) is applied to the analysis of operating overvoltage in different switching modes. Combined with all these data, over voltage characteristics of transmission line is obtained. The reference is provided to the investigation of the origin of transmission flashover. Suggestions to establish the technical proposal of the transmission line flashover prevention is also provide.
