Abstract Taking a 500kV AC composite insulator ground flashover of dry switching impulse voltage withstand test of the ±800kV Xin Dong HVDC project Xin Song convertor station as the background, based on test phenomena and test results, the root cause of ground flashover of composite insulator is found by simplified test model method. When the test experiment is not installed, dry switching impulse voltage withstand of composite insulator grading ring to the ground is less than the test voltage. Explore the mechanism of the use of the test experiment on the results of the dry switching impulse voltage withstand test. It provides a good experience for future test.
