Fast fault identification method based on real-time algorithm of current root mean square value for fault current limiter

Abstract:Fault current limiter (FCL) can effectively limit the short-circuit current of power system, which is one of the important methods to improve the reliability of power system. In this paper, short-circuit current characteristics and current limiting performance of an economical FCL with a split reactor are studied. According to instantaneous current-voltage relationship of a reactor and the concept of the current effective value, a kind of real-time algorithm of the current effective value is established. Based on a 10kV/300A power system example, the characteristics of current’s and voltage’s changes after a short-circuit fault are studied. And the fast fault identification methods are studied and analyzed contrastively by using different signals, such as current instantaneous value, rate of current’s change, conventional RMS (root mean square) algorithm, real-time algorithm. Finally, a short-circuit fault current limiting experiment is designed and the algorithm has been verified. The research results show that the real-time algorithm of current effective value can reliably realize fast fault identification at every fault phase-angle, and the limiting reactor of the FCL can be put into the power line to limit short-circuit current in time, which improves the current limiting performance and operational reliability of the economical FCL.
