Abstract The vertical axis permanent magnet direct-drive wind power generation system is complex multivariate of non-linear system. In order to maximize the capture of wind energy and improve the utilization of wind energy, this paper proposes the sliding mode variable structure control strategy to achieve the dual closed-loop control of speed loop and current loop at generator side, which can replace the linear PI controller. The simulation results show that the linear sliding mode controllers guarantee the quick system response and capture the maximum power point, which can obtain maximum effect of wind energy, especially in the situation of the various wind speed.
