Abstract This paper showed a malfunction of 35kV automatic switching device caused by the superior protection action on 110kV incoming line. Based on the message of protection action, by theoretical analysis and systematic test, it was affirmative that the inconsistent logic of internal timers in automatic switching devices was the main reason leading to this accident. And an effective solution on that problem was proposed at the end of the paper.
