Design of a universal insulator replacement tool for the first and the last units of ±800 kV ultra high voltage direct current transmission line strain clamps

Abstract:To facilitate the replacement of the first insulator at both the tower and conductor ends of tension strings in ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission lines, this study proposes a universal insulator replacement clamp for both ends. This paper analyzes the technical principle of the universal insulator replacement clamp for both ends. The structural characteristics of the six-in-three attachment point tension string and its corresponding hardware assembly are analyzed. A design approach for the insulator replacement clamp is introduced, using the triangular yoke plate and the insulator steel cap as anchor points. The clamp consists of an end clamping piece, an insulator movable clamp, and a screw rod adjustment mechanism. The end clamping piece anchors the triangular yoke plate at either the tower or conductor end, while the insulator movable clamp fastens the insulator steel cap. By adjusting the length of the screw rod, the load on the insulator is transferred, enabling the removal and replacement of the first insulator at either end of the tension string. Experimental verification confirms that the clamp meets both dynamic and static load requirements. Application results demonstrate that the tool can effectively remove and replace the first insulator at both ends of the tension string. The developed insulator replacement clamp provides an effective technical solution for the safe maintenance of end insulators in UHVDC transmission lines.
