Abstract:The open-circuit fault of substation storage battery critically challenges the steady operation of power grid. Traditional freewheeling device, however, is installed individually on each battery, resulting in cost, control, reliability problems. Thus, simple and reliable open-circuit fault localization and centralized freewheeling methods are proposed in this paper. First, by comparing the currents of battery and DC load, charge and discharge states can be determined. Then, in the state of non-artificial discharge, faulty battery can be detected and localized with the voltage and internal resistance. Finally, the centralized freewheeling device drive a diode to the faulty battery, achieving accurate and reliable freewheeling. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed methods.
