Abstract:To detect the occurrence of high impedance fault (HIF) in distribution networks, a new detection method based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) and graph signal indices is proposed. Firstly, a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) are obtained from transient zero sequence currents by VMD. Secondly, kurtosis calculation is performed to select most sensitive IMFs which reflect HIF transient variables. Thirdly, the graph indices of selected IMFs are calculated as criteria for classification. Lastly, the random forest is used to evaluate and classify the fault indices for HIF detection. The proposed method can accurately distinguish HIF and switching events (load switching and capacitor switching) in PSCAD/EMTDC.
